Weat Maize Rotation

Print

Introduction:-
• In district Bandipora maize is being cultivated over an area of 4630 ha under rain-fed condition with low input use, use of land races and high plant density
• Maize was a staple food of tribal farmers whose main crop is maize.
• Being a rain fed crop grown on sloppy lands under the foothills of forests it is mostly being damaged by bear during the months of August-September.

 • With changing food habits and availability of other food grains at very low prices through PDS, farmers have stopped consuming maize as staple food and its main use remained as fodder.

Rationale:

  • Production under nutrient and water stress condition
  • High seed rate, low input use, use of undecomposed FYM
  • Use of land races
  • Rain fed crop
  • Low yield
  • Changing food habits- very low use as staple food
  • Vanishing natural water resources (Ponds/Springs)
  • Fodder scarcity and very high cost of fodder
  • Low cropping intensity (118 %)
  • Damage by wild animals (Bear)
  • Heavy infestation of Cut Worms
  • Prolonged Spring rains leading to delay in sowing

Objectives:
1. Improving food and nutritional security
2. Increasing per capita production
3. Increasing cropping intensity
4. Increasing fodder availability
